Rare & Beautiful 1940 American Bantam 65 Standard Coupe

New to our Benicia showroom is this outstanding rare 1940 American Bantam 65 Standard 2 Door Coupe with burgundy and black exterior paint along with a matching burgundy leather interior.  You’ll find a 747cc four-cylinder engine under the hood with the matching 3-speed manual transmission and this example is in fantastic overall condition and ready to be enjoyed.  It is one of the most impressive original classics that we’ve seen in this rare model for quite some time.

Highly Original  Factory Drivetrain

The 1940 American Bantam 65 Standard Coupe was one of around 6,000 total Bantams produced across all models from 1937 to 1941.  Previously known as American Austin, former employee Roy Evans purchased the bankrupt company back in 1935 and resumed production under the new name in 1937.  The 1938 model was inspiration for Donald Duck’s iconic vehicle in cinema and American Bantam also released the prototype for what we all know today as the original Jeep.  Over 2,600 of all Bantams produced in this era were sold to the British Army, so the 65 Standard Coupe was a very limited production run with only a handful still believed to be remaining.            

For this particular 1940 American Bantam 65 Standard Coupe, the current owner informs us that he’s enjoyed it since 2008 as the 4th lifetime owner.  This example underwent a complete nut and bolt restoration a number of years ago and the results are spectacular, with gorgeous flowing body lines and excellent finish.  The exterior paint is mirror-like in appearance and the five correct wheels are also exceptional in appearance.  Meanwhile, the fully restored interior is new in appearance and looks excellent in person.  With nicely sorted mechanicals and an impressive ride quality, this is easily the most complete example we’re seen in the Bay Area.
