The 545i reawakened

Dinan takes the 545 back to basics, skipping the high-tech extras in favor of simple upgrades that bring out the essence of the midsize Bimmer

As my colleague Dom Miliano has noted, an E60 5 Series with Active Steering, Active Stability Control, run-flat tires and an automatic transmission, can feel a bit remote, like a BMW with a dissociative disorder. Skip the Sport Package and it loses even more of its sport sedan identity, as well as much of its connection to the driver. Fortunately, there\'s a cure available at Dinan\'s Morgan Hill, CA clinic. Through the therapeutic application of grippier tires, wider wheels, bigger brakes, better suspension and a little more power, the 545i regains its sense of self along with the tactile sensations that normally make a BMW so feelsome. Let\'s start with the most elemental of those connections: the tires. In place of the standard run-flats, the Dinan 545i uses Michelin Pilot Sports that measure 245/35ZR-19 up front and 275/302R-19 at the rear. Though that combination is identical in size to what BMW uses as part of its own Sport Package, it adds 40 mm of rubber at the front axle and 110 mm at the rear to the 545i\'sstandard non-Sport setup, which also uses far less grippy all-season tires. Dinan mounts those Michelins on its own spread-forged alloy wheels, which it claims are the lightest available in the 9 x 19-inch front and 10 x 19-inch rear sizes. We don\'t doubt that, and in any case the combination reduces total unsprung weight by a claimed 47 lbs., 23.5 lbs. at each axle. Reducing unsprung weight especially by so substantial an amount has such a profound effect on vehicle dynamics that it\'s well worth the $2,648 asking price of the four-wheel set. The improvement is immediately noticeable from behind the wheel, conferring the Dinan 545i with a lightness that\'s almost unbelievable if you\'ve only driven the relatively ponderous standard car. Reducing the weight that hangs off the end of the suspension lets the dampers work more easily, and it also improves braking and acceleration by reducing the amount of energy required to either slow or set in motion these spinning parts. Dinan further improves vehicle dynamics by addressing each of the other components that affect them. The 545i\'s relatively modest one-piston calipers are replaced by sexy Brembos which trade single pistons for four and the standard 348mm front rotors for much larger 380mm discs (the rear discs retain the stock 345mm diameter but mount cast iron friction parts on aluminum hats in place of the standard one-piece rotors). Hugely expensive at $6,390, these brakes are also hugely worth it, especially if you have any track-day ambitions for your 545i. The stock brakes may be fine under normal driving conditions, but they tend to fade when above-normal demands are placed upon them. The Brembos, meanwhile, simply excel under any circumstances, and the confidence that endows can be priceless. By comparison to the brakes, Dinan\'s suspension setup for the 545i looks an absolute bargain at $1,741. Forsaking the more expensive JRZs of the S3-M3 for more pedestrian Konis paired with the company\'s own performance spring set, front camber plates and strut tower braces, Dinan has created a setup that\'s affordable and effective as well as sublime. The Dinan 545i feels taut and controlled from turn-in to corner exit, yet that precision doesn\'t come at the expense of ride quality. If anything, the Dinan car is actually more comfortable than the stock machine thanks to the reduction of body roll-something that can be particularly problematic for the back-seat passengers that a 545i owner will presumably carry on occasion. If those passengers are heavy, the Dinan 545i driver will be glad to have a little extra power at his or her disposal. By means of revised intake and exhaust systems as well as a high-flow throttle body, Dinan has upped the output of the 4 3 9 8 cc V8 engine from 325 hp at 6,100 rpm to 350 hp at 6,500 rpm. Torque increases similarly, from 330 lb-ft at 3,600 rpm to 343 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm. The additional power isn\'t earth-shattering, but it is enough to bring the 545iwithin 10 hp of its successor, the 550i, though it\'s still down on torque by 17 lb-ft compared to the newer model. Nonetheless, at around $6,000 the Dinan engine mods are certainly more cost effective than buying an entirely new car, particularly if you already own a 545i. More power can be liberated through the use of Dinan\'s lightweight flywheel, which shaves 7 lbs. (or 18%) from the stock flywheel\'s mass. We were unable to test the effectiveness of this part since the 545i we drove was equipped with an automatic transmission, and we were similarly unable to test Dinan\'s optional 3.45:1 differential to replace the standard 2.93 rear end. Both would undoubtedly enhance acceleration considerably, and we wouldn\'t hesitate to take advantage of both options were we building our own 545i and were money no object-the parts would together add $3,998 to the total package. One option that\'s unavailable from Dinan at any price is conspicuous bodywork. Though it undoubtedly frustrates photographers and art directors hoping for fresh visuals, Dinan\'s low-key approach is thoroughly appreciated by those who\'d rather fly below the radar than in full view. It also renders a Dinan car considerably more \"adult,\" retaining BMW\'s inherently low-key appeal rather than trading it for the often-embarrassing extravagances of most tuner cars. Underneath that unmodified exterior, however, lurks a car that embodies the essence of BMW even better than the standard product. More powerful, better handling and more comfortable while remaining equally versatile and usable, the Dinan 545i is like a 5 Series that\'s been reawakened from a coma. We are proud to offer this stunning one-of-a-kind 71 Buick Riviera Boattail Hardtop. The owner of this car has been going to car shows for over 50 years and wanted to build something different from the staple 32 Fords, Chevelles, Camaros and Mustangs etc., that you see at those shows. The mission was to create a four passenger full size car while maintaining the effect of the period with a contemporary flavor.

Body

So the project began and he came across a clean and original 71 Buick Riviera which he would use. The car was so clean he decided not to take the body off the frame. They started by removing the windows, doors, fenders, hood, interior, including the dash. They stripped the body and interior down to bare metal. There was no body fillers or bondo used. They felt that the one area that needed customizing was the front end. The front bumper was massive; it went from mid grille all the way to the bottom of the fender. They made the front bumpers, de-chromed the back bumper and brought it in closer to the body. The mirrors came from a 2006 Corvette. They carved the bases for the mirrors out of aluminum on a CNC machine. The headlights are custom made HID, the tail lights are custom made HID lights and are sequential. The instrument panel was custom made by Dakota Digital.

Interior

The interior was lined with Thermo-Tec exhaust and heat protection. Front seat units are 6 way - 2006 G.M. Rear seat units were fabricated. Seats are french seamed with flat bar insert design. Package tray has padded leather insert with hand punched and inlaid leather speaker outlets. Visors are finger tabbed with welted edges. Carpet is custom fitted British-wool broadcloth and wool carpet with hand sewn and picked seams. The seats are wrapped in Scottish-Angus leather.

Stereo

"In my 20 years of experience creating custom systems, this 1971 Buick Riviera is one of my favorites. I used only the highest quality materials in creating the visually stunning trunk and audio system for this one of a kind classic. In the cabin, I started with an Alpine CD player and flash drive installed in the dash. JL audio speakers were installed in the front, and Polk audio SR series in the back deck. Moving to the trunk, Polk audio SR speakers flank two Alpine 4 channel amplifiers. A JL audio 10 woofer was tucked away, behind the amps, to rock the crowd at car shows. Each piece in the trunk was hand formed from fiberglass and carefully sculpted to perfection for the tightest fit. I then, carefully, wrapped each piece in the finest imported leather. Countless hours were spent creating the fiberglass inlays that were painted in red to highlight the amps and the speakers and give a stunning contrast to the tan leather. I love the end result, and I truly enjoyed being a part of this project."

Engine

Buick 455 V8 bored to 4.35 inches giving 464ci. Wiseco forged dished pistons with 1/16 rings, approx 10.5:1 compression, Eagle H-beam rods, 6.635 length, hydraulic flat tappet camshaft at approx 231/239 degrees duration at .050 and in the mid .500 lift range, fully grooved cam bearings, internal oil passages as required for this application, dual guard intake manifold and aluminum heads, ported and flowed to 320 plus cfm, extra capacity oil pan, MSD 6AL ignition box. The engine was built by PAE Enterprises in El Paso, TX. Jim is a renowned Buick engine builder. Most of his engines are built for drag racers around the U.S.A. The motor was broke in and tuned on Jim's Dyno. 527hp@ 5600 rpm and 609 foot pounds of torque @ 4600 rpm. The radiator is custom built aluminum with two 1350cfm fans.

Suspension

Air Rid Technologies Ride Pro 3 (4-way system) with remote control, two 3 gal air tanks, 2 compressors, big red value upgrade, high tech electronic control allows the user to program three automatic height presets with added level pro digital right height sensors. The system intelligently utilizes both air pressure and ride height information to accurately adjust vehicle suspension level. Level Pro upgrade for Ride Pro E3 system (4 external sensors) double convoluted air springs in front and 2000 pound tapered rear air springs in rear and four Billet aluminum adjustable shocks.

The car was shown at six car shows between 2008 and 2009. It won 2008 Cruise of Champions at Hot August Nights, was featured in Meguiars tent at Hot August Nights 2008. It won two Best of Show, two 1st place in class, one Best Custom Creation, One Cool Ride, One Special Award, One Sponsors Choice and two Best Paint Awards in 2009. The car is a pleasure to take to car shows. The response from people is amazing. Everything from what kind of a car is it to I've never seen anything so beautiful. Turn on the stereo in the trunk, put on some cool tunes, like the Beegees and you will have the people dancing in no time!

This one of a kind custom was a collaboration of five Hall of Fame builders. The pictures do not do it justice; you must see it in person. Chassis
Cadillac rides on the frame it was born with. A pair of Fatman spindles with Cadillac discs lowers the altitude by 2 inches in the front. The rear frame was C-notched and the stock suspension was rebuilt with a few leaves removed and blocks added to get the rear down. Air bags from Air Ride Technologies are used all around to drop the Caddy for fairground cruising and give it the floating-on-a-cloud ride these Cads are famous for. A Chevelle power steering box was added for easier turning.

Drivetrain
The engine compartment was finished immaculately and Joe Lamont packed it with a brand new Chevy small-block, rated at 330 horses and dressed to kill. Induction comes from a single Holley 750 on a polished manifold, topped with a polished billet air cleaner. The billet valve covers match the air cleaner cover. Custom headers and stainless pipes run the exhaust to a pair of glass-pack mufflers. The polished brass radiator from US Radiator keeps the engine running cool. A new 700-R4 transmission was installed and the stock Cadillac rearend was rebuilt.

Wheels & Tires
In keeping with the traditional custom theme Frank was after, he selected a set of 15-inch Kelsey Hayes wire spoke rims from Wheel Vintiques, dressed up with Cadillac emblem caps and wrapped up with 7.10-15 BFGoodrich wide whitewall tires.


Body & Paint
The most noticeable exterior components are the chopped top and the paint. Well-known customizers Frank DeRosa Sr. and John Aiello built the custom Carson top, and Aiello and Frank Jr. chopped 4 inches from the A-pillars. Bill Reasoner did the cutting on the side windows from U.S. Glass.
The door handles were shaved, seams molded and hidden, and the hood profile was mildly rounded, but the full bumpers and trim pieces remain, with the brightwork restored by Sherm\'s Custom Chrome Plating. Dick Falk created the custom molding, in particular the custom metallic scoop trim on the rear quarters. After hours of careful metal finishing on the body, Frank Jr. sent the car to Marcos Garcia at Lucky 7 Custom Shop in Antioch, California, who shot the Candy Brandy Wine, a custom mix of House of Kolor paints.


Interior
It may not be all \'52, but it\'s mostly Cadillac stuff on the inside of the car. The seats are from an \'05 Eldorado and feature lumbar support and heat. Gregg Philbrick at Contra Costa Vinyl in Pittsburg covered them with high-quality hand-selected Swedish leather done in traditional tuck `n\' roll; each roll was stuffed by hand. The leather extends to the door panels. The carpet is Rolls Royce material. Even the trunk was treated to leather and RR carpet. The center console holds controls for the Vintage Air A/C system (installed by Frank, along with Larry and Lloyd Selph) and the stereo, as well as an ice box for refreshments. The dash is stock, with gauges restored by Red Line Gauges and contemporary polished billet air vents. The steering wheel and tilt/telescoping column are from an \'85 Cadillac. A Pioneer CD/DVD player with Rockford Fosgate amps and Punch subwoofers was installed by Brian Hohman. The Ron Francis wiring kit was installed by Antioch Muffler.

All 2004 Z06 Corvettes will benefit from the continual pursuit of performance enhancements that have characterized the C5 era. The enhancements for 2004 are subtle in terms of physical parts, but significant in terms of the car\'s performance and feel.

GM engineers have refined the Z06\'s shock damping characteristics to provide improved handling in the most challenging conditions, while maintaining good ride control for the demands of daily driving.

Continual analysis, development and refinement of the shock valves in particular resulted in more damping control and force, delivered more smoothly. This new tuning is aimed at diminishing the impact of yaw and roll on the car, particularly in quick, transient maneuvers such as \"S-turns\" or a series of tight corners.

\"While the Z06 already had an excellent blend of extreme handling capability and surprising ride quality, we\'re never satisfied,\" Hill says. \"The enhancements for 2004 provide a bit more poised and smooth response, connecting the car better to the driver\'s input, without the penalty of ride harshness.\"

These refinements are a result of extensive testing and development, including several high-speed test sessions at Germany\'s famed Nurburgring circuit. Corvette Z06 is one of only a precious few cars to have broken the 8-minute barrier for lap times at Nurburgring. Corvette testing at Nurburgring isn\'t just about raw speed, as the Z06 provides plenty of that. Engineers gathered important learning on tuning the chassis to enhance the poise, confidence and smoothness of response, attributes that are of great importance under the severe demands of a 14-mile course that has approximately 170 turns and virtually constant elevation changes.

\"Nurburgring, at the extreme edge of the envelope, provides conditions that can\'t be easily duplicated anywhere else,\" says Hill. \"But, even for the Z06, we spend considerable time ensuring we don\'t make adjustments that compromise the normal daily driving character of the car.\"

Peking To Paris Rally In 1907 And In 1997 Driving from Peking to Paris, then and now.

90 Years Later

Ninety years later, the sequel: The Second Peking to Paris Motor Challenge, celebrating the epochal race of 1907. This time the field was made up of 94 vintage automobiles ranging from a 1907 LaFrance Hooper to a 1978 BMC 1800. In between were a trio of bare-bones Citroen 2CVs and a couple of Buicks. The field also included several Roll-Royces and Bentleys, and Charles Kleptz from Ohio driving the only 5.7-liter Marmon of its type in existence. Kleptz broke three axles before leaving China, the rough roads knocking him out of the race.

Shipping entrants cars to China was no cheap undertaking. The cost by boat from California was close to &2000, and last-minute-Charlies had to dig deep to come up with the &12,000 air freight ticket.

The 100 drivers from 22 countries made up a cast of characters equal to that of the original event. There was a duke, a prince, a member of Parliament, and a brain surgeon or two. The rally supplied doctors and official mechanics but prohibited any other outside support. Navigation was by map and compass.

When the flagman signaled the start of the 45-day rally, the drivers headed westward from \"Peking,\"actually the Great Walland into the semi-desert landscape of Inner Mongolia and past the giant sand dunes that line the Yellow River.

Once through the magnificent scenery of the Tibetan plateau, the drive became more challengingup the Kunlun Pass to an altitude of 17,000 feet, past snow-covered peaks to the very roof of the worldand on to Lhasa, Tibet. 

The racers drove through the Himalayas, over twisting dirt and gravel roads, near the base camp at Mt. Everest. Then it was into a gorge, through dense vegetation, to the Friendship Bridge at Nepal. 

Once they descended into the valley at Katmandu, the drivers headed through the plains of northern India, past the Taj Mahal, and into the deserts of northern Pakistan before reaching Iran and trails traveled by Marco Polo.

Beyond Tehran, in northern Iran, the roads got much more crowded. The racers drove along the coast to Istanbul and on to Greece before taking a ferry ride into Italy. Then it was a sprint through the Alpine passes and on to Paris.

First to cross the finish line was the British team of Phil Surtees and John Bayliss driving one of the more uncomfortable entriesa 1942 Willys Jeep. They were followed by Americans Ted Thomas and Vic Zannis in a 1950 Ford Club Coupe. Third place went to the British father-and-son team of John and Simon Catt, driving a 1965 Ford Cortina. 

It marked the end to the first-ever rally to cross Tibet, go through the Himalayas and over three desertsthe longest-ever motoring challenge for vintage and classic cars to mark a famous anniversary. And it closed a page in motoring history that celebrated a journey of scope and imagination, an adventure of motorcars and the human spirit.
